Welcome to Ryan’s Interesting Tales. This is the first entry of many more to come. This is a blog that has been created for a class called Issues in America and every week there will be a new post added to the blog. These different posts can be based upon a variety of subjects in America ranging from politics to human rights and everything in-between. In this blog I will express my opinion based on issues that America is facing. Freedom of speech is something that America was founded on and blogging is a way for everyday people to share their views. One thing though that we have been discussing in class is how freedom of speech differs from symbolic speech. Meaning, where is the line drawn for symbolic speech. I believe personally that there should be no limitation on symbolic speech. This is due to the fact that if I am expressing my beliefs about politics through a shirt, this is no different than telling people I see on a daily basis. On that note though, there should be some limitation on how far one person goes with symbolic speech. People should morally know what is offensive to others and not. The freedom of speech is not abused in public places where inappropriate references can be made. Sure there will always be the few people who go past what is morally right but given the option people will respect others and I believe this same concept will carry over and apply to symbolic speech.
